Fujisawa Canada’s eczema education program wins CDA award for the second consecutive year

MONTREAL, September 8, 2004 – The Eczema Awareness, Support and Education program (EASE), a national awareness program sponsored as a community service by Fujisawa Canada, Inc. has won the Canadian Dermatology Association’s (CDA) Public Education Award for the second year in a row. The award was presented to Robert Goldberg, Fujisawa Canada’s product manager for dermatology at the 79th Annual CDA Conference held in Victoria in early July.

"The Public Education Awards are intended to recognize excellence in increasing awareness of dermatological issues and to promote healthy behaviour in the care of skin, hair and nails," said Dr. Denise Wexler, chair of the Membership and Awards Committee of the Canadian Dermatology Association. "The EASE program has proven to be highly valuable to patients and health care professionals across Canada by providing them with helpful and instructive educational resources."

This comprehensive national, bilingual patient education program was developed in 2002, in collaboration with leading Canadian dermatologists, to provide Canadians with useful information about eczema. Clinical experience had shown that a large number of patients experienced difficulty and frustration in managing their eczema and therefore often did not comply with medical treatment. The program was established to help eczema sufferers and their families better understand the chronic nature of this disease, its triggers, treatment options and psycho-social issues, by offering them non-commercial educational resources, such as booklets, pamphlets and a website (www.eczemacanada.ca). A patient newsletter and documentation in Mandarin were introduced to the program in 2004.

"Fujisawa Canada’s educational grant has resulted in the creation of a valuable resource in the challenging process of improving patient outcomes in the treatment of this chronic, recurring skin condition. We have received very positive feedback with respect to the EASE program. Eczema sufferers communicate through the interactive eczemacanada.ca website and tell us that they find the program material to be very useful in managing their condition,"said Robert Goldberg. "We are honoured that the CDA has chosen to once again acknowledge the merits of EASE."

Since its inception, the EASE program has reached over 15 million Canadians through editorial coverage in trade and consumer publications and on the web. In 2003, the requests for information coming from patients and health care professionals increased by 137% over 2002.

The Eczema Awareness Support and Education (EASE) program is a national patient education program sponsored as a community service through an unrestricted educational grant from Fujisawa Canada, Inc., a research-based pharmaceutical company based in Markham, Ontario.
