Moisturizers

Moisturizers, sometimes called emollients, are mixtures of oils, fats, and water, which help to restore the oil and moisture content of the skin. Using moisturizers regularly on your child's skin is the most important thing you can do to manage eczema. Moisturizers are available over-the-counter or on prescription from your pharmacy in the form of creams, ointments, soap substitutes, and lotions. Use moisturizers as often as you can, especially after bathing or showering.

Creams vs. lotions vs. ointments

  • Emollients = moisturizers
  • Moisturizers = oil and water combination
  • Creams = water + oil
  • Lotions = watery creams that can contain skin irritants
  • Ointments = oil
